Boat Design using Mesh Unfolded

Mesh Unfolder was originally developed for the purpose of unfolding 3D CAD mesh models of model ship hulls. These were models of warships that had 3D curved surfaces that must be made from flat sheet with some measure of deformation to achieve the 3D shape. Mesh Unfolder was developed to translate the 3D mesh shade into a 2D form such that the stresses and strains in the material were distributed optimally through the material.

The program has since been used in numerous applications including further boat design projects. Mesh Unfolder is effectively a processor for mesh and 3D surface data generated in a conventional CAD system. It imports a DXF file containing a mesh or surface model, then processes it using various parameters and options and exports the result back to the CAD system.
