Archery Scope

Revcad Ltd are the developers of a revolutionary product for the archery enthusiast call the ‘Archery Targeting Scope’. The product is a high-tech, electronic, computer controlled device that fits on a vertical bow for the purpose of range shooting, hunting, bowfishing and archery training.

Range Shooting - The archery targeting scope can be used to automatically compensate for the trajectory of the arrow over long distance to give an accurate shot at all ranges and at all elevations - uphill or downhill.

Bowfishing - The archery scope has a unique and powerful capability for bowfishing by automatically compensating for the effects of refraction. This is the bend of light as it passes through the water surface, which results in the image of an underwater target appearing in a virtual position that is displaced from the real position. In reality the fish or target is deeper than it appears and a nearer to the viewer. Present practices require a educated guesswork but this is a difficult skill to acquire, and even then will result in many misses. The scope senses all the necessary parameters using its onboard sensors to work out the perfect compensation so the bowman can aim directly at the underwater target and shoot with a high level of accuracy even down to considerable water depths.

Archery Training - The archery scope removes the traditional dependency on stances, posture, frames of reference and repeatability. This makes archery much more similar to targeting with a gun using a gunsight where steadiness is the key skill. The scope can be used to train an archer to use a traditional sight or for field archery to aim and shoot intuitively achieving accurate targeting without using a sight. Typically attempts to produce repeatability depend on similar conditions, but if the shot alters in some way - for example uphill or downhill, then accuracy becomes much more dependent on intuition and experience. The scope senses these conditions and knows about the tilt angle and range to target and uses these parameters to make an automatic compensation so that accuracy is maintained. For hunting this capability is very important given that most targets offer a one shot opportunity.

The Design - The above image shows the first working prototype of the archery scope product. This design includes the following features:

  • Camera unit mounted on a pivot mechanism for automatic, vertical plane shot compensation.
  • On board computer and electronics with software to drive the mechanisms and vision system.
  • LCD display with cross-hairs mounted on an outrigger towards the archer on the right side of the bow.
  • Batteries mounted in the left side outrigger and used to counterbalance the display.
  • The outriggers and mountings project backwards towards the archer to maintain forward/backward balance.
  • On board tilt sensor for sensing shot elevation.
  • Range finder to determine the range to target.
  • Focus controls.
  • Electronics controls to drive the menu system for setting modes and options and calibrating the device.
  • Height sensor to sense the height to the water surface for the fishing application.

Stage of Development - The archery scope has been developed up to the first working prototype (see above) and Revcad are in the process of producing the final prototype and raising investment to optimise the design in terms of size, weight, image and general aesthetics to turn it into a ‘must have’ product. The production version will be minimised mechanically and electronically to make it sleek and attractive ready for production and marketing. None of these steps involve any level of risk but are basically a repackaging of the device as it now exists. This will result in a reduction in size to nearly half of the current version. All controls are moved to the touch screen reducing the electronics box along with the balance weight components.
